President Marcos Highlights Media’s Role as Cornerstone of Democracy
September 13th, 2024

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has underscored the critical contribution of journalists in fact-checking and nation-building.

In his speech during the oath-taking of various media organizations in Malacañang, Marcos urged the media to uphold high standards in presenting news and information.

“I ask that you continue to adhere to the utmost ethical and professional standards of journalism — free from sensationalism, bias, and personal motives,” the President said.

Marcos highlighted the role of media in checks and balances.

“Help us see and address the weaknesses of our system; continue to uphold our nation’s best interests so that our country can continue to flourish,” he said.

As influencers and fake news peddlers continue to proliferate on social media, Marcos reiterated that journalists should help the public discern what is true and what is not.

“These people that post fake news are not interested in providing news, they are interested in getting followers because more followers, more money,” he said.

“So, as you fulfill your mandate, I urge you to remain at the forefront of our efforts in helping our people distinguish truth from misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation,” Marcos added.

Meanwhile, the President reiterated his commitment to maintaining open lines of communication with the media.

He also said that he listens to commentaries, even those that are critical of his Administration.

“Don’t shoot the messenger. If they really believe what they’re saying, then think about it, baka naman tama siya? And that’s why we need you. We need the media. I always consider you partners in government and that the check and balance that you provide is very important.”

Marcos administered the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected officers of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas, National Press Club of the Philippines, Malacañang Press Corps, Malacañang Cameraman Association, and Presidential Photojournalists Association last August 27, 2024.
